Waterjet garnet sand and its cutting characteristics

Waterjet garnet sand and its cutting characteristics

Waterjet garnet sand is a special abrasive suitable for high-pressure water jet cutting (waterjet cutting). With a particle size mostly between 80-120 mesh. It features high hardness, sharp edges, and strong wear resistance, making it a key consumable for achieving “efficient cutting” in waterjet cutting.

Waterjet sand’s core role in waterjet cutting can be summarized in three points:

  1. Enhanced Cutting Capacity: High-pressure water (300-600MPa) is inherently inefficient at cutting hard materials like metal and stone. However, when mixed with waterjet garnet sand, the garnetparticles impact the workpiece surface at high speed with the water jet. Through a dual action of “grinding + impact,” the material structure is rapidly broken down, enabling the cutting of metals with a hardness of HRC60 or higher, and even 100mm thick stone.
  2. Improved Cutting Precision: High-quality waterjet garnet sandhas uniform particle size and regular edges, ensuring even distribution within the water jet. This prevents chipping and burrs caused by inconsistent particle size, maintaining a cutting precision of ±0.1mm, meeting the demands of precision machining (such as cutting mechanical parts).
  3. Reduced Cutting Costs: Compared to laser cutting (high energy consumption) and plasma cutting (heat deformation), waterjet garnet sandcombined with high-pressure water cutting consumes less energy and causes no thermal damage to the workpiece. Furthermore, garnet sand can be reused through a recycling system, reducing material waste and lowering unit cutting costs.
